OCONEE, SOUTH CAROLINA- International Day of Persons with Disabilities happens on December 3rd around the world. Its aim is to heighten the attention to the rights of people with disabilities.

This holiday was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly resolution in 1992. The goal was to create a foundation and clear outline for progress on disability awareness and inclusion.

An Intellectual disability puts a limitation on that person's ability to learn and reason. They usually have difficulty in school work and applying social skills because they are unable to bridge certain gaps. Developmental disabilities affect people physically since birth, such as cerebral palsy. Both types of disabilities are important and can appear simultaneously.

The individual and their families are largely affected by the presence of the disability. 75% of Americans with an I/DD are supported by their family, while the other 25% are financially supported by publicly funded programs. While 30 million families are affected by a disability in the family. Usually they receive support, in New York alone families receive 10.1 million dollars a year for support.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities center their operations to empower people with disabilities by promoting inclusivity. This day unites the world to recognize the struggles endured by those silenced. Increasing awareness of the situation people with disabilities deal with economically, socially, politically, and even emotionally.

The purpose of creating an international day is to analyze the global patterns relating to I/DD. There is a panel discussion held by the UN on new initiatives for disability inclusion and future plans.

It is important for those with an I/DD to identify and obtain resources and services that support their needs. Raising awareness works to shift the taboo discussion and change politics to benefit the community. Considering less than one third of individuals with a disability are employed. Though a generalization, most individuals affected by an intellectual or developmental disability are unable to support themselves.

The Arc of Oconee operates directly to solve this issue by promoting individuality and autonomy. Providing equal work opportunity is a way to reach this goal. The organization strives to provide members with events that enhance and strengthen independence and improve public understanding.
